Its rash season, we’re seeing an uptake in poison ivy cases. There are plenty over-the-counter options to help with poison ivy, but the best option of prevention.  The first most important rule is removing oils from the skin.  Poison ivy, oak and sumac all contain any oily resin called urushiol which for most causes a contact dermatitis (“derma-” skin, “-itis” inflammation), for some this can be serve.  If you’re concerned you may have had an exposure make sure you wash your  person and clothing, strip down, clothing straight in the washer so not to risk touching those pesky oils later.  Gloves are always a good option when working outside, so make sure you don’t forget to wash those.   Topical skin cleansers can be used after exposure to help remove rash causing oils from skin.  There are specific cleansers like (i.e. Tecnu Poison Ivy Scrub) but any good ol’ soap and scrub will do.

The rash associated with poison ivy will tend to show up first in the area with the most exposure to the oil. So it’s not uncommon for the rash to worsen and show up in more places overtime (even days).

If you already have poison ivy dermatitis the next step is to bring down skin inflammation and avoid itching at all costs.  Apply cool compresses for 15-20 minutes/hour, or cool showers to help with itch.  Over-the-counter topical agents can be applied several times a day for symptom relief (calamine lotion, calmoseptine ointment).  Plus over-the-counter topical steroid (i.e. hydrocortisone 1%) cream, be sure to only apply as directed to the affected areas and avoid normal appearing skin.  Avoid scratching the area.

If your rashes widespread, involves face or genital, or worsening to point you’re concerned this is where evaluation by a doctor is advised, Freedom Doctors will come to you.

In those cases you may need an oral steroid.

This is a public service announcement to the men out there, if you’re removing brush and have to pee, PLEASE go inside and wash your hands aggressively with soap and water… trust the doctor on this one.
